Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) is funded through a grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The vision of the Florida state HOPWA program is to increase housing stability and improve the quality of life for clients and their families. The goal is to prevent the condition of homelessness from occurring to individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS or if already homeless to transition individuals and families to stable housing as soon as possible.

Area 8 includes “State HOPWA”

Area 8 includes “State HOPWA” in Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Glades, Hendry, Lee and Sarasota counties along with Manatee County, which is outside of Area 8.  The Health Planning Council of Southwest Florida is the lead agency for this program.

Eligibility:

  • Household must have at least one person who has HIV or AIDS
  • Total household gross income less than 80% of Area Median income guidelines
  • Proof of Florida residency
  • Enrollment through a Case Manager
  • Verifiable document of need for housing assistance
